Health Preparation

A physical training

Walk and Run

The treks vary from 3 to 21 days.
Many of them are between 2 and 3500 m above sea level … but there are also many which rise above 4000 m, up to 5700 m, or even more. It is therefore important to prepare your body for such efforts.

Walking and regular running are the best for training.

Depending on your project, 1 to 6 months of training is necessary.
Go out running or walking 3 to 4 times a week. During this month or months of training, give yourself at least a period of daily outings for one to two weeks, 10 to 20 km per day.

Of course, high-intensity treks require really more suitable and consistent training.
But at this level, you know what you have to do to be ready.

Hundreds and thousands of miles of stairs!
The mountains of Nepal have no gentle slopes. They’re all sliced and dashed with a sword. The slopes are always steep and strong. Thus flowered the cultivated terraces, magnificent, and representative of this region of the world… and so flowered the stairs. There are stairs everywhere; especially to go to the temples, very often built on the heights of the villages.

Trekking in Nepal is the assurance of going up and down thousands of steps, more or less uneven, and often high or even really high! One often wonders how these stairs were built, so many of them, and so far up in the mountains.

One of the best preparation is therefore to seize ALL opportunities to go up and downstairs.
Forget elevators and escalators!
Walk up and down whenever the opportunity arises!

And if life doesn’t offer you many opportunities, then have fun every now and then climbing the floors of a city tower, the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona!

Immune Preparation

A strong immune system is the best preparation for dealing with living conditions that are very different from what we know in the West and for living an adventure in the Himalayas in the best possible way.

Feeling good in your body, head and heart is the best way to have a strong immune system!
It, therefore, requires to be in very good health, to have a balanced emotional state, an alert mind and an enlightened spirit.

The Sequential Fasting

It is an immune system booster and a very simple and effective way to return and establish good health.

Intermittent fasting consists of not absorbing any food for 16 hours, if possible for 21 days.
There are two possible choices:

  • having a good breakfast in the morning and a full meal at noon…
    have a full meal at lunch and a lighter supper in the evening

Sequential fasting strengthens the DNA, brings a tonicity boost, a decrease in the frequency of allergies, asthma, and rheumatism. It helps to better eliminate metabolic waste products and reduce inflammation. It also very often results in a fresher, clearer complexion.

It is a very flexible fasting practice. It can be broken at any time.

Healthy Nutrition

It is now known that food is very important for health.
There are dozens and dozens of theories and millions of pieces of advice.

Here, we just want to suggest one thing: stop the desserts at the end of the meal!
No dessert? No sweets at the end of the meal? Why not?
Prepare yourself!
On the one hand, you won’t experience the lack that most Westerners feel in India and Nepal, where desserts at the end of meals don’t exist.
On the other hand, you will allow your body to digest better and you will no longer impose on it the fermentation and acidosis caused by the sugar in the alimentary bolus, which acidosis is a mark of the modern world and one of the main causes of all kinds of imbalances.

A balanced emotional state, an alert mind and an enlightened spirit

The Yoga

Your Himalayan adventure project may be an opportunity to discover or deepen this discipline of stretching, flexibility and body fluidity that best prepares the body for any intense effort.

Relaxation is a strong point of recovery.
The more you know how to relax, the faster you can recover after intense efforts.

Pranayama or Yogic Breathing

Breath, especially at high altitude, is a very important element and parameter of Himalayan treks.
We strongly invite you to invest yourself in courses and to practice it as often as possible if not every day.

Mental & Emotional Preparation


And things don’t always go as planned.
Power failure when you can finally call your family… Heavy rain on a mountain trail at a time when it’s normally always sunny… Road under construction… Rustic comfort… Hot water flowing desperately cold… Toilet paper out of stock… So many situations can happen that a Westerner accustomed to the relative comfort and especially relative control of events does not expect!

Asia is always an opportunity to grow in flexibility, relativity, and patience.

One of the best preparations is thus to practice day by day, in one’s life, determination rather than exigency, unconditional welcome rather than criticism, smiles rather than grumbling and good humor rather than the reactivity of all kinds.
When Westerners are quick to get angry, grumble and criticize, even internally, it is always a surprise to the Nepalese who do not understand why they get angry when the situation is AS it IS and everyone does what they can.

Buddha said: “Life is frustrating. And you know what? Life will always be frustrating. »

Auronepal Trek is very proud of this wonderful dimension in its offer of trips and treks.

All the guides of the agency are from Sri Aurobindo Yoga Mandir and are very happy to give back a part of the abundance of benefits they have received during their lives.

In the same spirit, each visitor, as much as possible, is invited to implement a solidarity dimension to his or her journey.


Solidarity Contributions

Each visitor is invited to complete his/her suitcase(s) with clothes – in good condition – or some utensils and materials needed by the ashram.

Everyone is usually allowed to travel with luggage of 23-30 kg.
With Air India, some flights allow 2 suitcases of 23 kg to be carried. These are the only ones that allow this.

Of course, you are not obliged to participate in this solidarity dimension. No one in Auronepal or in the SAYM ashram will tell you anything or think anything about it. You are free. This is an extra dimension to your adventure, which we are happy to offer you.
It is also a great opportunity to enter even more fully into the preparation of your journey.

And if you can only make a jackpot of 50 €, that’s already wonderful. We will be very grateful.

For your information, the year 2020 is, financially speaking, almost as catastrophic for Sri Aurobindo Yoga Mandir as the earthquakes of 2015 were, without the destruction. Several tens of thousands of euros from the basic budget of 200,000 annuals have been lost: no more milk sales, no more vegetable sales, the treks and stays in Nepal cancelled, the events and retreats in France also cancelled, but above all, the cancellation of the IDEC 2020 which was supposed to allow us to welcome more than 400 people coming from 40 different countries for 10 days.

Trip Preparation


The Nepalese rupee – different from the Indian rupee – is the currency of Nepal.
Its exchange rate varies from 110 to 130 rupees for 1 euro, or 1000 Rps for about 8 €.

No need to change your money when you arrive at the airport: the ashram offers you this and allows you to change your rupees at the end of your stay.

Téléphone and Internet

At the Ashram
WIFI is available throughout the ashrams. So it is wise to install WhatsApp on your mobile and ask your friends and family to do the same. This will allow you to communicate with them for free by message, phone or video… but also to send them photos, videos, sound recordings… FREE OF CHARGE.

Some lodges and guest-houses allow access to WIFI, often for a fee. But this is not guaranteed. To phone and communicate everywhere, in the mountains and in the countryside, it is better to buy a Nepalese sim card. The ashram will be able to guide you to do this. Please note that some regions in the Himalayas require a special sim card.


In Nepal, the current is 220 volts. Normally there would be no need for a plug adapter, but if the European 3-prong round triangular plug adapters fit well, the 2-prong round plug adapters will not fit into Nepalese sockets. Therefore, it is better to have a multi-form adapter with a 3-pin base to fit all types of configurations.

It is good to have a flashlight: in Nepal, power cuts are sometimes frequent.

Everyday life

In Nepal
Saturday is THE holiday of the week like It’s Sunday in Europe.
Sunday is the first day of the working week! The children go to school.

At the ashram
Saturday morning is dedicated to Karma Yoga, the service at the ashram.
For some, it is to go and sell the ashram’s vegetables and produce at the organic markets in Kathmandu.
On Friday, starting at 4 pm, the hive is at work preparing all the vegetables. On Saturday at 5.30 am the cars are loaded and at 6.30 am the vendors leave to sell at the three organic markets in Kathmandu :

  • Sherpa Restaurant – Baluwatar Maharajgunj
  • Utpala Cafe – Boudhanath – 200 m from Stupa
  • 1905 Restaurant – Naxal
Drinking water

At the Ashram
A bottle of drinking water is provided free of charge on arrival at the ashram. Afterwards, there is water available at all times from a filtration plant in front of the kitchen. It is fed by water from the ashram borehole which plunges 110m down to fetch water directly from the water table.

Feel free to ask for hot drinking water (tato pani, in Nepali) from the kitchen if you need it.

In the morning and in the afternoon, tea is available.

– A book about the incredible life of Ramchandra, the founder of Sri Aurobindo Yoga Mandir.

Many products are made where they come from the ashram.


In October, November and December, the sky is normally clear, the sun is shining and the view of the mountains is very often perfect. Daytime temperatures are pleasant. This is an excellent time to visit Nepal, although temperatures can get colder and colder in the evenings as you move towards the end of the year.

January is the coldest month. It is sunny during the day.
December and January are a good time to stay in the Terai Ashram in the south of Nepal where the climate is much milder… and the mosquitoes much less present.
In winter, trekking is always possible at altitudes below 3,000m because of the cold. The weather is very clear and the visibility of the mountains is excellent.

From mid-February, the climate becomes milder. From March to May, the days are sunny and the temperatures become milder and milder. This is the flowering period for rhododendrons, which are real trees and not shrubs as in Europe. It is magnificent!
The view of the mountains is getting worse and worse as the monsoon approaches, especially in the Annapurna region.

The monsoon extends from mid-June to mid-September, roughly.
It is due to humid air masses coming up from the Bay of Bengal and being blocked by the Himalayas. Forced to rise, they cool and condense to fall as rain.
The monsoon can be very violent and generate large floods or landslides. Some regions are less affected such as the northern Annapurna, Upper Dolpo, and Mustang.
The monsoon is also synonymous with leeches. They can be very numerous! Fortunately, nature has made available the Mugworts, a plant very present in Nepal and very effective to stop blood because leeches inject an anticoagulant to be able to suck. They disappear with the dry season, but can still be frequent until November in wetlands, whether in the Terai plain or in the mountains.

Your Health Pack

NO vaccination is required

Here is some information gleaned for your health kit to take with you on this trip. It’s up to you to judge what you want to take with you: this list is given as an indication.

  • Citroplus, grapefruit seed
  • Vitamin B cure – Jacques Vigne, who has been living in India for many years, advises BENERVA ROCHE, Vitamin B1 in coated tablets at the high dose of 250mg. One tablet per day. This gives the body a fragrance that mosquitoes don’t like. Start before the trip.
  • Solvarum to breathe and put on the skin after a mosquito bite, as a disinfectant.
  • China 7 ch, homeopathic granules in pharmacy, against diarrhea. EO preparation for travel
  • Tea tree essential oil (disinfectant) Small tube of green clay paste (for wound)
  • Magnesium chloride for digestive worries, for use in drinking water
  • Vegetable coal
  • Rescue (for emotional shock)
  • Arnica 7 hp in homeopathic granules (muscle pain) …
  • Echinacea mother tincture: 30 drops morning and evening, for anti-infectious prevention. It is also the best antibiotic equivalent. To be taken as a continuous treatment from the day before departure until 1 month after.

Friends use the following EO compounds when traveling in India, Asia, Africa or South America. They are effective in preventing intestinal problems and the consequences of mosquito bites…even if it doesn’t taste good…especially at breakfast!

These preparations can be ordered in pharmacies.

Oral formula 2 drops per day :

  • – H.E. Rosm. off.verbenone 15%
  • – H.E Melaleuca leucedendron 15%.
  • – H.E. Pimenta dioica s.b eugenol, chavicol 10%.
  • – H.E Thymus satureioiedes s.b borneol 10%.
  • – H.E Mentha piperita s.b menthol 5%
  • – H.E Cinnamomum zeylanicum o.p.bark Madagascar 10%

The dermal formula, 1 application per day on the wrists

  •  20% of a mixture of 5 E.H. :
    E.O. Eucalyptus citriodora 25%.
    H.E Cymbopognon winterianus 20%.
    H.E. Aniba roseodora 30%
